God and Golf

Why do athletes give God so much credit for all their accomplishments? With Tim Tebow professing his faith in God publicly, the combination of God and Sports has come more into the forefront again. Golf is no different. After winning the Masters Bubba Watson posted on his twitter account, “To God Be The Glory!” Why would he do that since he physically won the Masters and hit the shots ? Why do athletes give God so much credit for all their accomplishments?

From a Christian perspective I think that a section of the Bible from John 15:5 says it well, “I (Jesus) am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing.” The word that comes to mind for me when I read these verses is humility. Humility doesn’t mean I am worthless or I have nothing. What it means to me is that I admit that I need help with what I have or the task in front of me and am willing to have someone help me. That person for these Christian athletes would be God through Jesus Christ. I believe that what these athletes are doing is admitting to needing help, asking God to help them, watching Him work through them and then giving God the credit for His work in their lives.

God is still alive and at work today and He is working through these athletes to show us a little glimpse of His power and person. I need Him to help me and want Him to help me. How do you feel about asking God to help you?
